Smells & pests

Why do my drains smell after heavy rain?

Heavy rain surcharges the sewer, pushing air and gas back through the system. Where a trap seal is weak, a vent is blocked or a pipe is cracked, that displaced gas escapes into the property or garden — which is why the smell appears with the weather.

Check trap seals first, particularly in little-used fixtures and outside gullies. Rain-driven pressure changes find every weak seal in the system.

A blocked soil vent pipe amplifies the effect because the system has nowhere to breathe. Vents block with leaves and nests, especially in autumn.

Persistent post-rain smells outside can indicate a cracked drain being flushed by groundwater. A CCTV survey settles it.
