Pitch fibre pipe is a lightweight bitumen-impregnated wood-fibre pipe used in UK housing from the 1950s to the 1970s. It deforms into an oval shape over time, blisters internally and delaminates. Most pitch fibre drainage is now at or beyond the end of its life.
If your property dates from that era and has original drainage, assume pitch fibre until a survey proves otherwise. Deformed sections restrict flow and cause repeated blockages.
Pitch fibre can often be reformed with a specialist die pulled through the pipe and then lined to hold the restored shape — a far cheaper route than excavation.
Never jet pitch fibre at high pressure. It is one of the few pipe materials where aggressive jetting genuinely causes damage.
