Responsibility

How do I report a blocked public sewer?

Call your regional water and sewerage company's 24-hour emergency line — Thames Water, Southern Water or the relevant provider for your postcode. Blocked public sewers and lateral drains are their responsibility and they attend at no cost to you.

Signs that the problem is in the public sewer include several properties in a street affected at once, sewage surfacing in the road, and your boundary chamber being full while chambers within your property are clear.

Have your postcode and a description of the symptoms ready. Photographs help.

If they attend and determine the blockage is within your boundary, you will need a private contractor — but it costs nothing to have them check first.
