Responsibility

Who do I call about a blocked drain in the road?

Road gullies and highway drainage are the local highway authority's responsibility — the county council in most areas. Blocked public sewers are the water and sewerage company's. Neither is a cost to you, so report it rather than paying a private contractor.

Report road flooding and blocked highway gullies to the county council's highways team, usually through an online fault reporting form. Include a photograph and the nearest house number or lamp post ID.

For sewage in the road, or several properties in a street backing up at once, ring the water and sewerage company's emergency line — that is a sewer problem and they attend as an emergency.

If in doubt, the water company will tell you within a minute whether the pipe in question is theirs.
