Request the sewer records from your water and sewerage company for public pipes, check the property's building control drawings for private runs, and for anything unrecorded use a CCTV survey with sonde tracing to map the layout accurately from chamber to chamber.
Sewer records show public sewers and lateral drains but rarely private pipework within a boundary, which is where most of the surprises are.
A survey produces a measured drainage plan showing runs, directions of flow, chamber positions and pipe sizes. That document is genuinely useful when extending, paving or selling.
Get the layout before you build anything. Discovering a drain under a new foundation is an expensive way to learn it was there.
