Blockages

Do drain rods actually work?

Drain rods work well on soft blockages within reach of an access point — typically the first 10 to 15 metres from a chamber. They are ineffective against compacted fat, scale and roots, and can make things worse if the head unscrews and is lost in the pipe.

Always turn rods clockwise. Turning anti-clockwise unscrews the joints, and a lost rod head in a drain becomes a permanent blockage that needs retrieval or excavation.

Rods push a hole through an obstruction rather than removing it, so flow may return while the deposit remains. That is why jetting is the professional default.

For a gully or a short run they are a reasonable DIY tool. For anything beyond that, they are the wrong equipment.
