Can a blocked drain flood my house?

Yes. Once the drain is blocked, waste water backs up to the lowest opening in the system, which in many houses is a ground-floor shower, bath or WC. If water keeps being used, the property floods with contaminated water within a short time.

The risk is highest in properties with ground-floor bathrooms, basements, or a lower ground floor with any drainage connection.

The single most effective thing you can do is stop all water use the moment you spot backing-up. That halts the rise while help is on the way.

Where a property has flooded before, a non-return valve on the outgoing run is a permanent protective measure worth fitting.
