Emergencies

The water company says the blocked drain is mine — what now?

That means the blockage is inside your boundary in a pipe serving only your property, so you need a private drainage contractor. Ask the water company where exactly they determined the blockage sits — that information tells your engineer where to start and saves time on site.

Water company engineers usually check the boundary chamber. If it is empty, the blockage is upstream in your pipework; if it is full, it is theirs.

Occasionally the assessment is wrong. If your engineer's camera survey shows the defect beyond the boundary, that footage is the evidence to go back to the water company with.

Either way, get it cleared first. Arguing about responsibility while sewage is rising is the wrong order of priorities.
