Emergencies
Have the drain cleared first, then remove and dispose of contaminated porous materials such as carpet, underlay and chipboard, wash hard surfaces with detergent followed by a disinfectant, ventilate thoroughly and dry the area completely. Photograph everything before you start for insurance.
Personal protective equipment is not optional: waterproof gloves, eye protection, a mask and boots. Wash clothing separately on a hot wash afterwards.
Plasterboard that has wicked up sewage should be cut back above the tide line and replaced — disinfecting the surface does not decontaminate the material.
Drying matters as much as cleaning. Residual moisture in floor voids leads to mould and lingering odour weeks later.
