Blockages
Caustic and acid-based drain unblockers can corrode old lead, copper and cast iron pipework, soften some plastics and damage seals. They also generate heat, which can distort plastic traps. In underground drains they are diluted to uselessness and simply pollute.
The risk is highest in period properties with original waste pipework, and in bathrooms where plastic traps and compression seals are common.
Repeated use also creates a hazard for whoever opens the pipe next — always tell an engineer if chemicals have been used.
For a slow plughole, cleaning the trap takes ten minutes and carries no risk at all. For anything more serious, chemicals will not work anyway.
