What does a gurgling sink mean?

A gurgling sink means air is being drawn through the trap because the waste pipe or vent is partially restricted. It is an early warning of a developing blockage — the pipe is still passing water, but not freely, and air is being pulled past the trap seal.

If the gurgle happens when another fixture drains, the shared branch is restricted. If it happens with nothing else running, look at the soil vent pipe.

Ignoring gurgling almost always ends with a full blockage. It is the cheapest point to act.

Cleaning the trap and the branch, or a short jetting visit, usually resolves it entirely.
