Blockages

What causes drain blockages most often?

The most common causes, in order, are fats, oils and grease in kitchen runs, wet wipes and sanitary items in foul runs, hair and soap scum in bathroom wastes, leaves and silt in external gullies, and root ingress through failed joints in older clay pipework.

Four of those five are behavioural and preventable at zero cost. The fifth — root ingress — is structural and needs a survey and a liner.

Blockages rarely have a single cause. Fat coats the pipe, a wipe snags on it, and the deposit builds from there.

Understanding the cause of your blockage is what stops it recurring, which is why the camera check after clearance matters so much.
