Underground drains rarely freeze because they sit below frost depth, but exposed external waste pipes, condensate pipes and shallow runs can. Lag exposed pipework, keep gullies clear so water does not stand, and never pour fat away in cold weather — it sets instantly.
Boiler condensate pipes are the most common winter freeze. Lagging or replacing with a larger diameter pipe run internally solves it permanently.
Standing water in a blocked gully freezes and creates a plug, which then backs up the run behind it. Cleaning gullies in autumn prevents it.
Cold pipework solidifies kitchen fats faster than at any other time of year, which is why the Christmas period is the peak season for kitchen blockages.
