Outside drains

How do I find my inspection chamber?

Inspection chambers are usually near the rear of the property in line with the soil pipe, at changes of direction, and close to the boundary where the drain leaves the plot. Look for square or round metal or plastic covers in paths, drives, patios and lawns.

Follow the soil pipe down the wall and imagine the line it takes to the boundary — chambers are almost always on that line.

Chambers frequently get covered by decking, turf or block paving. If you cannot find one, a survey camera with a sonde will locate it precisely.

It is worth knowing where they are before you need them at 2am in the rain.
