Blockages

Does boiling water unblock a drain?

Hot water can soften a light grease film in a kitchen waste pipe, but it rarely clears a real blockage — the fat simply re-solidifies further along the pipe. Never pour boiling water into a ceramic WC pan or through plastic waste pipes, as it can crack the pan and distort fittings.

The physics are against it. Hot water cools within a metre or two of pipework, so any grease it melts is redeposited downstream, often somewhere much harder to reach. Over months this migrates the blockage rather than removing it.

Hot (not boiling) water with washing-up liquid, run for a couple of minutes weekly, is a reasonable maintenance habit for a kitchen sink. It is prevention, not cure.

Once flow has actually stopped, the deposit is compacted and only mechanical clearing — a snake, rods, or high-pressure jetting — will remove it.
