Modern PVC drainage has a design life of around 100 years, and vitrified clay a similar span. In practice, failure comes from the joints and the ground rather than the pipe: Victorian clay systems commonly start failing at 80-120 years, and pitch fibre at 40-50.
It is almost always the joints that go first. Once a joint opens, roots and groundwater get in, bedding washes out, and structural failure follows.
Lining an old clay run effectively restarts the clock, giving a jointless pipe with another 50 years of design life without replacing anything.
Ground conditions matter: clay subsoils that shrink and swell seasonally, common across the Weald, are hard on rigid pipework.
