For external drainage work you usually need to provide access to the property and any locked gates, but you do not have to be present throughout. For internal work, or where chambers are inside the building, someone over 18 needs to be there for the duration.
It helps enormously if you are there at the start to explain the symptoms and at the end to see the camera footage and hear the diagnosis.
If you cannot be present, make sure gates are unlocked, cars are moved off any drive covering a manhole, and there is a contact number for questions.
For rented property, agree in advance who is meeting the engineer — tenant or agent — so the visit is not wasted.
